DeWitt Clinton Harris was born on July 17, 1814, the eldest child of John Richardson Harris and Jane Birdsall. In 1833, he and his mother traveled to Texas and settled in Harrisburg. Lewis Birdsall Harris was born in Waterloo, New York on July 1, 1816, the third child of John R. Harris and Jane Birdsall. When his mother left New York for Texas in 1833, he remained at the home of his grandparents until the spring of 1836. Although he arrived in Texas on April 21, he quickly joined the Texian Army.
